Verdict in: CFLs do impact less than Incandescent bulbs
One of my big hang ups with environmentalism is that the 'cure' may in fact, be worse than the disease. By this I mean, using the recent "Cash For Clunkers" program as an example, we smashed up tons of servicable cars and replaced them in many cases with only marginally more efficient cars. End result: the energy and materials used to build and ship the new cars ends up being environmentally worse than the original clunkers (not to mention worse on the taxpayer's wallet as well). That's why I am pleased to report that the compact flourescent bulbs do, in fact, turn out to be better than the incandescent bulbs. However, there is still that pesky disposal and breakage problem with the mercury in the CFLs.
